SC Collegium recommends six Additional Judges of Madras HC to be made permanent

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended that the appointment of six additional judges of the Madras High Court be made permanent.

As per a resolution issued on Wednesday, the Collegium has endorsed making the following judges permanent judges of the High Court: Justices S Ramathilagam, R Tharani, P Rajamanickam, T Krishnavalli, R Pongiappan, and R Hemalatha.

The resolution indicates that the proposal for making them permanent judges was made by the Madras High Court Chief Justice VK Tahilramani last month, following consultation with her two senior most colleagues. The proposal also has the concurrence of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the state's Governor.

The Supreme Court Collegium resolution was passed after ascertaining their suitability based on the material on record, interaction with colleagues conversant with the High Court's affairs, and an evaluation of judgments passed by them.

All the recommended judges were appointed to the Madras High Court as additional judges in November 2017. Whereas Justice Hemalatha's term as additional judge was slated to end in September this year, all other five judges were appointed as additional judges for a two-year term ending in November this year.

All six judges were recommended for elevation to the Bench in October 2017.
